Larimer County reported 13 new COVID-19 outbreaks this week — with 44 cases among them — but the overall number of cases in each outbreak continues to decline.

There are currently 3,487 cases of COVID-19 associated with 71 active outbreaks in Larimer County, according to new data released Wednesday by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.

The largest new outbreaks this week were reported at Berthoud High School, with eight cases among students, and at Auto Collision Experts, 900 E. Lincoln Ave., Fort Collins, with six staff cases.

Several outbreaks, including 2,403 positive cases at Colorado State University, have been ongoing and growing since October. The state’s totals for CSU lag behind the 2,706 cases the university has reported since May as of Friday.

Other schools reporting new outbreaks were: Ridgeview Classical Charter School, with three cases; Shepardson Elementary, with four; and Naropa University/Shambhala Mountain Center Program, with three.

No other newly reported outbreaks had more than four cases, and no new outbreaks were reported at any long-term care facility in Larimer County. Most of those facilities have completed vaccination clinics for residents and staff.

The impact the county is seeing from vaccinations for its older populations “is tremendous,” said Kori Wilford, a spokesperson for the Larimer County health department. “It’s incredible really to see and it’s very encouraging.”

Wilford estimated 75% of the county’s 70-plus year-olds have received at least their first vaccine dose. “If we look at cases from the peak of cases in December for 70-plus until now, cases are down over 95%,” she said.

The number of vaccinated 65-year-olds is also climbing, Wilford said. “As more and more folks in those older populations get vaccinated, it’s having a huge impact.”

The county is optimistic COVID-19 numbers will continue to drop now that the state has opened its vaccination clinics to those in the 1B.4 phase, which makes restaurant and service workers eligible, among others.

Potentially, that group could include many 18- to 24-year-olds, Wilford said. “We need to get cases down with those folks, too,” she said.

In the last 30 days, 628 of the 1,879 COVID-19 cases — about 33% —  have been among those age 18 to 24, according to health department data on Friday. About 10% of cases have been in those 60 and older, and about 12% have been in those under age 18.

The other newly reported outbreaks this week consist of two to four cases per location. Those locations include Advanced Interiors, Elliot’s Martini Bar, Fort Collins Jeep, Hach, Jared – Galleria of Jewelry, Precision Services Electric, The Farmhouse at Jessup Farm and The Urban Egg in Johnstown.

Outbreaks at Naropa and Urban Egg were first reported to the state health department on March 4 and March 5, respectively, but were not included in the state’s database until Wednesday.

Berthoud High School’s and Shepardson Elementary’s outbreaks were reported on March 9. Berthoud High, part of the Thompson School District, and Shepardson, in Poudre School District, are both closed for spring break this week.

Representatives from Auto Collision Experts did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
