Back in 2016, Joshua Karpeh was still working his white-collar job at a New York City marketing agency, sitting through boring meetings, worrying about getting fired, and daydreaming about doing something else entirely. So he did.
In the three years since, the 26-year-old Cleveland native has released three artfully crafted EPs under his stage name Cautious Clay. With a sound that’s equal parts D’Angelo and James Blake, he’s established himself as a soulful singer-songwriter and versatile multi-instrumentalist. And it’s clearly paying off.
Taylor Swift samples him on her new Lover album, John Mayer co-wrote and co-produced his latest single “Swim Home,” and he just wrapped up the European portion of his ongoing Context Tour. In a recent Rolling Stone interview, the musician summed up his post-corporate success. “It’s just so random,” he said. “It feels great.”
