City: Parking rate increases to pay for upgrades

Clarifying increases to parking hours and rates, the city issued a statement saying that it had identified $10 million in “beneficial projects and deferred maintenance needs” for parking structures and city meters.
Parking structures need stairwells replaced and elevators repaired, for example, and the city wants to replace almost 2,600 parking meters with new ones that come with better technology — including the ability to pay or extend time with a smartphone.
The new, higher rates will help pay for those upgrades, the statement says. One hour of on-street parking now costs $1.25, compared with $1 before Jan. 1. Parking rates in the three city garages are now $9 per day, and the monthly fee is $70.
Hours have been extended to 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 1 to 10 p.m. Sunday.
