Bar Louie is the latest Foothills redevelopment restaurant casualty after the burger chain closed its Fort Collins location Saturday.
The restaurant announced the closure on Facebook on Sunday, stating that Jan. 25 was its last day of business at the location and directing customers to visit their Denver restaurant. The restaurant’s Google page also indicates that the location is permanently closed.
Other Bar Louie locations in other states also closed abruptly over the weekend, media outlets across the nation reported. Other closures include restaurants in Ohio, Maryland, Michigan and Wisconsin.
At the mall Sunday, two signs posted on the windows of Bar Louie noted the closure. Just outside the shuttered restaurant was a prominently placed sign advertising Smokin’ Fins, which is located two spaces down the plaza from Bar Louie.
The parking lot for the Cinemark movie theater was full, and many customers could be seen walking into mall businesses. About 50 people were using the ice skating rink or watching family members from the surrounding seating area.
But now there are just two restaurants in the plaza — Smokin’ Fins and Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar — when it has room for six.
Bar Louie is the sixth restaurant to close in the five years since the renovated Foothills mall property reopened in 2014.
Smashburger announced its closure in December after after falling behind on several months’ rent. Hop Grenade, which was located in the plaza, closed the day prior to Smashburger, citing a lack of traffic at the Midtown property and competition in the beer-rich Fort Collins community.
The Melt, Grimaldi’s Brick Oven Pizzeria and Casa del Matador closed in late 2018, all for different reasons. The Melt closed all its Colorado stores, Grimaldi’s was seized over unpaid taxes and Casa del Matador made a business decision to shut down.
Foothills still features a number of food and dining options, including Auntie Anne’s Pretzels, Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar, C.B. & Potts, Longhorn Steakhouse, Nothing Bundt Cakes, Smokin’ Fins, Torchy’s Tacos and Zoe’s Kitchen.
Crumbl Cookies is set to open this week, offering free cookies at the new storefront on Friday. Modern Market is also set to open in 2020.
The mall and its surrounding shops were about 70% leased as of late 2019 — prior to Bar Louie’s closure — which is less than owners and city officials had estimated five years after the $313 million renovation. By that point, the mall was expected to be almost full and generating more than $9 million in sales tax revenue.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information is available.
