A Fort Collins mother suspected of being under the influence of drugs when she turned in front of a vehicle, resulting in the death of her 1-year-old son, has been charged with multiple felonies.
Tiffany Burke, 28, was charged with vehicular homicide and child abuse, both Class 3 felonies; vehicular assault and child abuse, both Class 4 felonies; and driving under the influence, a misdemeanor, according to Fort Collins Police Services.
Burke’s son, Riley Santos, was restrained but died Aug. 25 at Children’s Hospital in Aurora. Another juvenile male passenger in the vehicle, who was unrestrained, was ejected from the vehicle and was taken to Children’s Hospital. He is recovering from extensive injuries, police said in a news release Tuesday.
Burke was also unrestrained and was ejected from the vehicle. She was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland. Her relationship with the juvenile male was not released.
The investigation determined Burke was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.
A warrant was issued for her arrest Nov. 19, and she was located and arrested Monday with assistance from Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.
According to court records, her bond was set at $35,000. She remains in custody of Larimer County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon, according to jail records.
Her next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 27.
“This was an absolutely heartbreaking incident,” Fort Collins Police Chief Jeff Swoboda said in the news release. “One little life ended far too soon, and many other lives have been forever impacted by this tragedy.”
All suspects are innocent until proven guilty in court. Arrests and charges are merely accusations by law enforcement until, and unless, a suspect is convicted of a crime.
