I’m Jimmy Stone. I’ve been the singer for the A-Holes for coming up on 21 years. I’ve been a regular in our local scene and a lover of local music for all that time.
Essential Saturday night listening: I like to catch as much live music as I can, so Saturday night music can be anything. There’s a lot of great bands and performers in this town, but I usually seek out metal and punk bands.
Essential Sunday morning listening: Sunday mornings is when my band, the A-Holes, practice. So my short answer is that. I listen to fast metal or punk loud on the way to practice, and generally something calm on low volume on the way home.
First record I bought with my own money: Nine Inch Nails. Pretty Hate Machine. I’m not sure it was the absolute first I bought, but it sticks out as one of my favorite early music purchases. I collected a lot more NIN after that.
“Wish I’d written that” song: I wish I wrote like my brother, Mike. He writes most of the stuff for our band, and it cracks me up. I’m always excited when he tells me he wrote something new. He’s got a sick, funny mind.
“Wish I could unhear that” song: “Material Girl.” I’m not a Madonna hater at all, but that particular song drives me nuts, and it gets stuck in my head often for some reason. It’s stuck there now because I had to think about it.
Artist more people should know about: Have you seen the A-Holes? The Mostly Don’ts? The Centennials? Have you seen Girl its Girl? All locals, and there’s a ton of us. All worth checking out.
Guilty pleasure: I don’t consider any music to be a guilty pleasure. You like what moves you. But I get the question. I love The Cure. I love old country like Waylon and Willie. Merle. I love Ice-T and Kool Moe Dee. I love Miley Cyrus. But my favorite music always comes back to thrashy punk. All pleasure, no guilt.
