Larimer County logged 10 new COVID-19 outbreaks this week, with locations including several youth sports and recreation facilities and Poudre High School, among other places.
A dozen other outbreaks shifted to “resolved” status, meaning they haven’t seen a new case in at least two weeks. The number of active outbreaks in the county was down to 72 from 73 last week, according to state and county data.
The largest outbreak reported this week was at Premier Gymnastics, 1410 E. 11th St. in Loveland, which had 18 cases, 11 of which were students. Premier owner Richard Villareal said the cases resulted from a competition the gymnasts attended.
The first gymnast tested positive Feb. 15 and was mostly asymptomatic, he said. “One of the biggest problems is kids aren’t showing symptoms as much. She maybe had a runny nose.”
Before she was tested, the gymnast’s father tested positive for COVID-19, he said. “Then we knew she had it and spread it from there. Within a week it was crazy.”
Villareal canceled all activities, notified all parents and students, and shut the gym down for 72 hours. It reopened Feb. 25, per health department guidelines, he said.

Prior to the outbreak “we had cases here and there but everything was traced back to family gatherings,” said Villareal, who tested positive over New Year’s Eve, when the gym was already closed.
“I have no idea where I got it from,” he said. He quarantined for the required 10 days “and nothing came from that.” Villareal said he had mild symptoms and after a couple weeks felt normal.
If there are no further positive COVID-19 cases, he said competitions will resume next weekend.
The other larger newly reported outbreak this week is at Poudre High School, where the county is reporting seven cases among students and one among staff. Poudre School District’s COVID-19 dashboard reports a cumulative total of 20 cases at the school over the last 28 days, with 17 cases among students. There is often a lag between the progression of an outbreak and the numbers reported in the county data.
Other newly reported outbreaks occurred at Loveland Volleyball Club (four cases among attendees), Smokin Dave’s BBQ & Taphouse (four cases among staff), Center for Autism and Related Disorders (four cases among staff), Northern Colorado Youth Hockey (two cases among attendees), Larimer County Road & Bridge (two cases among staff), city of Fort Collins Operation Services Department (two cases among staff), Fred Loya/National Insurance in Loveland (two cases among staff), and Corkat Data Solutions LLC (two cases among staff).
The outbreak at the Larimer County Jail grew to 85 cumulative cases this week, up from 62 cases last week, but the increase was due to a change in reporting, Larimer County Sheriff’s Office spokesman David Moore said. The Larimer County health department recently changed its reporting policy for symptomatic cases without a positive test, Moore said, so the week-to-week increase is due to addition of cases for people who were experiencing symptoms but refused to take a test between November 2020 and mid-February 2021. Those individuals were isolated from others while they were at the jail, Moore said.
The number of cases associated with Larimer County’s active COVID-19 outbreaks fell slightly this week, from 1,265 to 1,250. That doesn’t include cases associated with Colorado State University, which increased from 2,015 to 2,175 this week, according to the county data.
