Larimer County reported 12 new COVID-19 outbreaks this week at locations including the Loveland Police Department, Whole Foods and Sunshine House child care center. But the overall number of cases associated with active outbreaks continues to decline as outbreaks trend away from health care settings and toward other locations.
There are 1,111 cases of COVID-19 associated with active outbreaks in Larimer County, which is down more than 30% from this time in January.
The number of active outbreaks during the same period decreased by a much smaller margin, from 78 to 72, reflecting a shift toward smaller outbreaks.
That doesn’t include 2,175 cases reported at the Colorado State University campus (county data can lag a few days or weeks behind CSU’s data, which showed more than 2,500 cases as of Friday).
The largest new outbreak this week was reported at Loveland Police Department, with seven cases among staff. LPD had not responded to the Coloradoan’s request for information prior to its print deadline for Saturday’s edition.
The other new outbreaks with five or more cases were at Sunshine House Early Learning Center, 2060 Perennial Lane in Fort Collins, and Whole Foods Market, 2201 S. College Ave. in Fort Collins. Sunshine House reported two cases among staff and three cases among attendees. All five cases were in the same classroom, so the center closed that classroom for two weeks, did a deep-cleaning of the entire facility and notified all families and team members of the positive cases, company spokesperson Barbra Richardson told the Coloradoan.
“We have strengthened our health and safety practices based on current guidance and recommendations from the CDC, state and local officials and departments of health to ensure we maintain a safe and healthy environment,” Richardson said in a statement provided to the Coloradoan. “This includes requiring face coverings, daily temperature checks and health screenings, restricted classroom access, ongoing deep cleaning, and regular sanitizing procedures known to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.”

The outbreak at Whole Foods includes five cases among staff, according to state and county data. The company didn’t respond to a Coloradoan request for additional information.
The other newly reported outbreaks this week consist of 2-4 cases per location. Those locations include BJ’s Restaurant, CAVA restaurant, Home2 Suites by Hilton, Johnson Elementary School, MacKenzie Place assisted living, O’Dell and Co. CPA office, and United Way of Larimer County in Fort Collins; and Loveland Classical School-Lyceum Campus and Ziggi’s Coffee (4201 N. Taft Ave.) in Loveland.
